Annual Research Forum

Save the date! The 5th Annual Research Forum will be held virtually on Monday, September 20 and Tuesday, September 21, 2021, from 9am – 3pm PDT.

CEA’s annual Research Forum invites subject matter experts across risk and resiliency disciplines to come together and discuss groundbreaking ways to improve the safety and security of our communities.

This year’s forum will concentrate on Equitable Residential Earthquake Resilience in California, with the focus on translating research into action.

As the world transitions out of the COVID-19 pandemic, we will be introducing a low-income supplemental grant in conjunction with the Earthquake Brace + Bolt program. Recent experience with health science communication and the inequitable impacts of a disaster on vulnerable communities can inform and improve the proposed grant. The conference will discuss “lessons from the pandemic” and resilience equity issues in order to develop strategies for a successful program launch, and to promote resilience justice throughout the state.

2020 Research Forum

In 2020, CEA teamed up with the Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research Center (PEER) to host the 2020 Research Forum on Residential Seismic Retrofits.

The 4th annual CEA Research Forum was held virtually on Monday, October 26 and Tuesday, October 27, 2020.

Topics focused on:

  • Current understanding of seismic risk for wood-frame single-family residential (SFR) structures and the tools available
  • Describing the CEA/PEER project and findings
    • “Quantifying the Performance of Retrofit of Cripple Walls and Sill Plate Anchorage in Single-Family Wood-frame Buildings”
  • Identifying remaining gaps in research, and potential research programs
  • Implications of SFR earthquake risks
