September is National Preparedness Month

National Preparedness Month is observed each September and encourages Americans to take steps to prepare for emergencies (including natural disasters like earthquakes) in their homes, businesses, schools, and communities. 

Be certain that your clients learn about their children’s school emergency plan (especially for earthquakes), and make sure they develop a family emergency plan at home. Take advantage of National Preparedness Month to advise your policyholders to be earthquake ready, and utilize these resources: 

83% of US Homeowners Feel Unprepared for Natural Disasters

In the last two years, the United States has suffered more than 20 major natural disasters—including a slew of wildfires, hurricanes, earthquakes, volcano eruptions, floods, tornadoes, and blizzards. Yet despite these ongoing reminders and some of the highest recovery bills in US history, a large majority of US residents remain ill-prepared for a natural catastrophe.

According to a recent study by Esurance, an Allstate-owned insurance company, 83 percent of homeowners felt unprepared for an unexpected natural disaster. Of those surveyed, 80 percent expressed concern about the increasing pace of these events. But only 17 percent consider themselves well prepared if a natural disaster were to occur with little warning, and fewer (only 13 percent) could explain their community's disaster plan.

“People believe that ‘it will never happen to me’ or that the government (or their insurance company) will bail them out in the end,” said Craig Edmonds, vice president of claims practices for Esurance.
